Oral and Dental Infections

An oral or dental infection may cause pain, swelling, fever or restricted mouth opening.

01

Why seek advice?

Tooth pain, swelling, an unpleasant taste, discharge, fever or restricted mouth opening may suggest infection. Medical conditions and some medication can alter the level of risk.

02

Which tests may be needed?

Examination looks for a dental, gum, mucosal, bone or salivary source and assesses spread. An X-ray or CT scan may be required; tests are selected according to the clinical findings.

03

Treating the cause

Treatment depends on the source and may combine dental care, drainage, removal of a tooth that cannot be saved, surgery and medication. Antibiotics alone do not always address a local cause.

04

After treatment

Monitor pain, swelling, temperature and mouth opening. Follow the prescription, local care instructions and review arrangements issued for your situation.

05

When should you contact the team again?

Contact the team if symptoms do not improve, return or worsen, or if treatment causes a problem. Do not use antibiotics left from an old prescription without medical advice.

06

Which signs require urgent care?

Rapidly increasing swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a changed voice, marked deterioration or high fever requires urgent assessment: call 15 or 112 in France.
