General surgical guidance
Instructions from your surgeon and anaesthetist always take priority over this general page because advice depends on the procedure and your health.
Before surgery
- Report any new illness, fever, infection or medication.
- Never change anticoagulant, antiplatelet or chronic medication without medical advice.
- Follow fasting instructions for sedation or general anaesthesia.
- Arrange an escort and transport home when requested.
- Reduce and stop smoking because it increases healing complications.
The first hours
Take medication as prescribed. Local pressure, protected cold packs, rest and a suitable diet may be advised. Do not put alcohol or irritating products on the wound.
Hygiene, diet and activity
Brushing, mouthwash, diet and return to sport depend on the operation. Avoid smoking and alcohol during healing. Do not explore the wound with fingers or objects.
Follow-up and continuity
Attend the planned review and keep the team’s contact details. International patients should arrange local follow-up and transfer of the operative report before returning home.
Contact the team or emergency services
Persistent bleeding despite pressure, breathing or swallowing difficulty, collapse, fever, uncontrolled pain or worsening swelling requires advice. Call emergency services in case of distress.
