Temporomandibular Joint Pain

Pain in front of the ear, clicking or restricted opening can have several causes and benefits from structured assessment.

01

Why seek advice?

Pain in front of the ear, tired chewing muscles, clicking, locking or restricted opening may arise from the joint, muscles or several contributing factors. An isolated sound without pain or limitation does not always require treatment.

02

What does assessment involve?

Consultation reviews onset, clenching habits, trauma and previous treatments. Examination covers the muscles, joints, jaw movements and bite.

03

Which tests may be needed?

Imaging is not automatic. An X-ray, CT scan or MRI is requested when it may change the diagnosis or plan, particularly after trauma, with persistent locking or when joint disease is suspected.

04

A progressive approach

Initial management is usually non-surgical and tailored to the suspected cause. It may combine explanation, changes in habits, dental care, rehabilitation or prescribed medication.

05

When is a procedure considered?

A joint procedure is considered only for selected situations after detailed assessment and when appropriate conservative measures have not provided the expected result. Benefits, limitations and risks are then discussed.

06

When should you seek prompt assessment?

Persistent sudden locking, severe pain after trauma, swelling with fever or a recent change in the bite warrants prompt advice. Breathing difficulty or major trauma requires emergency care.
